Trip to Leeds University Food Science Lab

To help us celebrate our upcoming 20th anniversary, Leeds University is partnering to bring us the 20/20 Challenge: 20 New Things for 20 Years of MAECare. Over the next year and a half, they will give our members a chance to have lots of new experiences, things that we never would have imagined back when MAECare began in 1995. The first of these was a trip to the Food Science Laboratory. We didn’t know what to expect, but it was a great time and very educational for all of us.

We got a tour of the facilities and saw all the state-of-the-art equipment used for the study of food science and nutrition, including a scale that costs £20,000! We also got to have a go at some tasting experiments, where we tried to tell the difference between different chocolates, squash varieties, and even Angel Delight. The day wrapped up with an informational session about food preservation and canning.
